Review
"As a Star Wars generation kid-disclaimer: the original Star Wars movies, not the prequels-this little book was pure joy. I now read it with my five-year-old daughter, who cracks up at little Luke and a much kinder, gentler Darth Vader."- Chicago Magazine"Darth Vader and Son [is] a sweet mashup of Star Wars and father and son bonding" - Chicago Tribune"But if you're one of those sad, empty few who haven't picked up Vader and Son, for yourself, a child, a Star Wars fan, a carbon-based lifeform, or anyone who likes things that are Good - do yourself a favor and pick it up, because not only it is adorable and funny, but it's also one of the best Star Wars books ever. In fact, buy two, because you're going to want to give a copy to somebody over the holidays, no question. " -io9.com"When the first Star Wars film conquered the world in 1977, no one could have possibly foreseen it going on to become such an ubiquitous part of our cultural heritage. Now even parenthood can be viewed through the filter of the Sith lord Darth Vader. Jeffrey Brown (Incredible Change-Bots) crashes headlong into George Lucas's galaxy far, far away with endearing, funny-and fully licensed-results. A series of full-page gag cartoons focusing on the 'what if?' of Darth Vader raising a four-year-old Luke Skywalker, the book twists father/son moments into scenarios within the Star Wars playground. For instance, the addition of a wailing little Luke turns the Bounty Hunter scene into, as one bounty hunter's thought balloon puts it, Awkward! Trick-or-treating, toy shopping, a day at the zoo, and more are rejiggered with a lighthearted, charming tone. However, the book also provides ample proof that adding a babysitting Darth Vader to any Star Wars situation makes it gently humorous. Brown's signature scratchy style is embellished with full color and stripped-down likenesses."- Publisher's Weekly"You won't find a more adorable Star Wars book this year than Darth Vader and Son. Seriously. It's a must-have for Star Wars fans of all ages, as it's not only insanely cute, it's quite humorous,"--Geeks of Doom"You don't have to be a Star Wars fan to appreciate this tender little book." -The Guardian (UK)"Darth Vader and Son is Brown at the top of his artistic game with beautiful full-color pages, many of which seem imbued with a sincerity that I would expect to find in his next autobiographical work, A Matter of Life. Darth Vader and Son is a book for fathers and sons and Star Wars fans and, well, pretty much anyone who enjoys happiness and smiles. " -Comics Bulletin"This is a good one for a young geek or their proud papa. " -Ain't It Cool News"This book is hilarious, short, and sweet. I'm sure it will have a real wide range of appeal that will include both young and die-hard Star Wars ones. There's probably not wrong reason to gift this, but it would definitely make for a good Father's Day present if you really need an excuse to buy Darth Vader and Son."--CSI: Librarian"The central conflict of 'Star Wars' looks considerably different -- and much, much funnier -- through Brown's eyes. Star Wars fans take note: Jeffrey Brown's Darth Vader and Son is a must-read! This is absolutely hilarious. It's full of parenting humor starring Darth Vader and his son Luke, and full of inside jokes and movie references for Star Wars fans.In an alternative Star Wars galaxy, Vader is raising Luke. "Episode Three and a half: DARTH VADER AND SON. Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith, leads the Galactic Empire against the heroic Rebel Alliance. Before he can take care of the Rebels, Lord Vader must first take care of his son--four-year-old Luke Skywalker. . . ."The son and his black-clad father go on outings, go shopping, go on space-ship trips, hang out around the house, play together. Luke is a typical four year old, and Vader is a typical harried parent of a four year old. Brown cracked me up as he put his silly twist on Star Wars and Luke and Vader's strange relationship. I do have to acknowledge that my teenage sons did not find this book as amusing as I did. They are Star Wars fans to be sure; I suppose parents who are Star Wars fans will appreciate the book most. Do yourself a favor and check it out.
According to the canon, Darth Vader is a father. In this book of Jeffrey Brown's Star Wars child rearing cartoon books: Darth Vader and Son, The Malicious Master of the dark side is also subject to all of the situations any parent of a 4 year old experience, plus a few more. Who knew that a masked and capped character can express emotions giving us a way to enjoy the simple pleasures of fatherhood? (Are we there yet?) .In 54 pages Brown illustrates all the common expressions of child rearing and places them in the nerd universe of Star Wars. Here, Luke really is a little short to be a Storm Trooper. The results are not always funny but they do allow us to remember and relive these moments with a smile.Family friendly and aspiring nerd appropriate.
I grew up during the Star Wars era - where Anakin Skywalker was a mangled, cyberfilled ball of hate with only the vocal talents of James Earl Jones saving him from eternal peril (that Jones' voice can save the soul of a man who blew up a flipping planet is quite a testament). My little princess grew up during the airing of Star Wars The Clone Wars where Anakin Skywalker was a barely scarred, good-natured, slightly impatient hero teaching a padawan while still needing guidance himself. For children who's first glimpse of Anakin wasn't one of a genocidal vassal of Darth Sidius and parents who don't want to bring that up until later, this is a beautifully entertaining book. Purists risk hating it and imagining using The Force to give wedgies to its author. It's cute, touching, endearing, and filled with moments where parents will relate to the poor Sith lord and children will see the Jedi in themselves. I've read this to my daughter; she's read it to her friends; and her friends have read it to her. It's pure, sentimental gold. Its only flaw is that it makes me crave the arrival of "Vader's Little Princess" that much more.
Sooo disappointed! These are cute as anything, and we bought them to write to my stepson/their brother/their son after a custody change (painful). Ex-wife got a bill from USPS for $.60 postage due because THEY ARE OVERSIZE (!? looks fine to me, but whatever). So I'll let you figure out how *that* scenerio went. :/Bummer! I won't be mailing him the rest of these, and I want to... He'll have to get less-awesome postcards that mail for the correct postcard rate.
The pictures on these postcards are charming and funny for children and adults alive. The pictures show everyday domestic interactions between a loving parent (Darth Vader) and his spirited, strong-willed, sometimes rebellious child (Luke Skywalker). Darth Vader looks like Darth Vader, while Luke is rendered as a child. The humor lies in seeing big, bad, Vader give Luke piggy back rides, read bedtime stories, field awkward questions, etc. These are sturdy, oversized postcards (will require extra postage) with high-quality printing and a coated matte finish on the front. I highly recommend!
The book is a great book. As Star Wars fans, both my 6 year old son and I found it to be funny. The problem is that he is just learning to read and he was finished with the book in 15 minutes. That is a lot of money for 15 minutes of reading. Maybe I will see if the library has the rest in this series, which would still only make for an hour of reading, tops. It's too bad they didn't have less expensive paperback versions.
My wife and I are huge Star Wars fans and we were looking for a way to introduce our 4 year old son into the Star Wars universe. After some research we found these books and I have to say they were a perfect introduction for him. They are nicely paced, easy to understand and they introduce a lot of the characters. The only down side is that you know from the title of the book that Darth Vader is Luke's father so unfortunately there was no surprise when he watched Empire Strike's Back. However he really enjoys the books and really loves the illustrations.
Heartwarming and wonderfully entertaining. Everyone who picks this up will be lifted up into light-heartedness. I really enjoyed this book. It's the perfect graphic comic for a commute from a difficult day at work. Every father can identify with these precious depictions of fatherhood with young children.
This book is great! Any Star Wars fan will love it. I bought it for my brother (who is a dad) and my own Dad, both of whom are Star Wars fans. Minor fans will get a kick out of it too, but real fans will really appreciate it. Some pages are just pictures and word bubbles that depict Vader and Luke as a normal father with a young son (Luke drops his ice cream, he doesn't like the food Dad made, he doesn't like Leia, etc.) and some pages have lines from the movies (Luke, I am your father, you must listen to me, You don't want that toy- Jedi mind trick that doesn't work on Luke). All of the pages will make you laugh, and all feature familiar settings from the movie. This is a great purchase and I will be buying the sequel that features Vader and Leia that comes out next year, Vader's Little Princess.
