What does a tornado look like? How does it sound? What causes a tornado? What should you do if you're in the midst of a tornado? Elephant Wind (Mom's Choice Award Winner) by Heather L Beal is an illustrated children's book that has all of the answers. This book was truly engaging and entertaining as Ms. Mandy and the children begin to deeply explore the phenomenon of tornadoes. What was great was how Ms. Mandy described the shape and sound of a tornado. The clever part was to give the children a more vivid image of a tornado by comparing it to an elephant’s trunk reaching downward from the sky. I saw this as a wonderful illustration. Ms. Mandy further provided the children with safety tips when experiencing a tornado. This is an excellent book for any child to read alone or to share with others. No one can be totally prepared, but this book answers so many questions that your child will ask about the wonders of tornadoes. Enjoy!- Vernita Naylor for Readers' Favorite (5 Star Review)Tummy Rumble Quake is a recipient of the prestigious Mom’s Choice Award. The Mom’s Choice Awards® (MCA) evaluates products and services created for parents and educators and is globally recognized for establishing the benchmark of excellence in family-friendly media, products and services. Prepare to be blown away by Elephant Wind. This heartwarming book is full of delightful illustrations and important messages. Author Heather Beal shows adults how they can educate young children about hazards in an entertaining and non-frightening way. She also shines a bright light on the often overlooked capacity of children to learn and to contribute to their own recovery and to the broader community.-Lori Peek, University of Colorado and Co-Author of Children of Katrina "Elephant Wind" is a creatively illustrated juvenile story that is designed to teach children (ages three to eight) what to do if a tornado happens. One important aspect of "Elephant Wind" is that it presents the information in a cheery, colorful, nonthreatening format which is appealing and engaging to children. A childcare class of child-animals, including Lily and Niko Rabbit, arrives with their owl teacher, Ms. Mandy on a bus to attend a science fair. A warning siren sounds and the children are asked to follow Ms. Mandy to a tornado shelter. Calmly on their way to the tornado shelter, Ms. Mandy explains what a tornado looks like: a strong, twisty, funnel-shaped cloud. When the young animals do not understand, she explains the tornado shape is like an elephant trunk reaching from the sky to the ground. Further explanations and descriptions of tornado sounds follow, and Ms. Mandy explains the importance of immediately going somewhere safe, like a basement, when they hear a tornado warning. To help the children remember their safety tornado instructions, Ms. Mandy sings a song to them: "Elephant wind coming round, Get to the basement or below ground. Cover your head and before you know, It will blow over and you can go." Soon the school principal ( a wolf) appeared to tell the children the tornado was gone. Although no one was hurt, a neighbor's house was damaged. The animal children began to think of ways they could help the neighbors whose house was damaged to feel better, making treats, and cards, and telling them that they cared. "Elephant Wind" ends with tornado-related questions and activities from Lily and Niko Rabbit. "Elephant Wind" is a fine instruction manual for young children on proper tornado safety procedures, taught in a clear and nonthreatening way.- The Midwest Book Review

ELEPHANT WIND is incredibly well-written to help educate younger children on hazards associated with tornadoes. The book takes some complex concepts (that many adults struggle with!) and effectively puts it in terms that children as young as Kindergarten can readily grasp. This learning can easily be shared amongst the younger generation, inculcating within them a stronger sense of preparedness. I can even see this book being the catalyst for some children to pursue careers in science and engineering. As someone who has dealt with public and private-sector emergency preparedness for over 37 years and with tornadoes a potential hazard in many areas of the United States, I highly recommend this book. If you live in an area that might experience the ravages of tornadoes and you have children in 2nd Grade and below, I strongly recommend the investment in this book.
ELEPHANT WIND creatively introduces a kid friendly description of one of nature's most powerful forces and provides a simple scenario to our young children on how to handle a tornado warning event at school. To help children visualize Heather Beal's description, the artist, Jubayda Sagor. provides a very creative picture on the book's front cover. The elephant trunk funnel cloud illustration provides educators, parents and even baby sitters with a tool to help children understand a tornado's makeup. The book is filled with illustrations to help tell the story. The story covers a day at school where the animal characters interact with their teacher to learn what a tornado sounds like and what a tornado can do. More importantly, the characters learn what they should do during a tornado warning event and Heather Beal's tornado song is something children can learn to reinforce the story's message. Lastly, the story's final message about helping others who may have experienced some destruction is a great way to end the story. TWISTER and Helen Hunt can provide the majority of us with a more entertaining depiction of tornadoes, but I prefer to introduce my granddaughter and her friends to this natural phenomenon with something that stimulates the young minds to ask questions. Heather Beal provides questions at the end of the book to enable good discussion topics for her readers. I bought a few books to give to local elementary schools and day cares in our area.
Excellent children's book. I purchased 5 to give to friends with young children. I was an emergency manager for over 25 years and Ms. Beal Elephant Wind helps teach children what to do to be safe and in the aftermath the importance of helping others. Look forward to your next book.
As an educator, certified emergency manager, mother and most importantly, a Grammy, I highly recommend this book. I live in Tornado Alley, Oklahoma. It is important to teach our little ones early to respect mother nature and her bad temper! I'm proud to say Heather is a friend and colleague. I can't wait for the other books to come out.
This is a great book for younger children to be introduced to tornados in a non-scary way. It teaches the seriousness of a tornado, but gives great information for kids to digest at their level in a way similar to fire safety lessons. I highly recommend this book for anyone with small children in their lives.
Elephant Wind is a cute book for teaching young children (3-5yr olds) the importance of taking shelter during a tornado!
great way to inform little ones of the bad weather possibilities with out scarying them. An area that is under served till now. Let your daycare providers know about this book so they can read it to all their charges, they can follow through with more. It does a good job without being frighten.
My g-daughter (8) is anxious during storms. This book really helped her in thinking about the control she has.
